What Is Chandra Rashi (Moon Sign)?

Chandra Rashi, also called Janma Rashi, is the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the moment of your birth. In Vedic astrology the Moon stands for the mind and emotions, which is why the moon sign is the basis for rashifal, name selection and many everyday traditions.

Moon Sign vs Sun Sign vs Lagna

Your sun sign is the sign the Sun was in at birth, and it can be worked out from the date alone. Your moon sign is the sign the Moon was in. Your lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of birth. Vedic rashifal uses the moon sign, while most Western horoscopes use the sun sign, which is why the same person can get two different signs.

How to Find Your Chandra Rashi

Look at your janam kundli (birth chart). The position of the Moon is marked, and the sign it sits in is your Chandra Rashi.
No kundli at hand? Ask an astrologer or use a kundli calculator with your exact date, time and place of birth. The date alone is not enough.

Why You Cannot Find Your Moon Sign from the Birth Date Alone

The Moon travels around the zodiac in about 27 days, so it spends roughly two and a quarter days in each sign. People born on the same date can therefore have different moon signs, and people born on different dates can share one. That is why the birth-date ranges shown on most horoscope sites only give a rough sun-sign guide.

Janma Rashi and Naam Rashi

Janma Rashi comes from the Moon's position at birth. Naam Rashi comes from the first syllable of a name, using the traditional nakshatra-pada chart. When birth details are missing, families often follow the naam rashi, but the Janma Rashi is preferred whenever it is known.
